The United States Naturalization Test assesses an applicant’s knowledge of U.S. history, government, and civics. It is a crucial step in the process of becoming a naturalized citizen. While English proficiency is a requirement for naturalization, certain exceptions exist regarding the language in which the exam is administered.
For many years, allowances were in place permitting older applicants, meeting specific age and residency criteria, to take the test in their native language, including Spanish. This provision acknowledged the challenges some long-term residents might face in acquiring sufficient English language skills later in life, while still recognizing their contributions to the country and their eligibility for citizenship.
